Brain Vascular Surgery
Brain vascular surgeries are complex procedures aimed at treating abnormalities within the blood vessels of the brain, such as aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). An aneurysm is a weak spot in a blood vessel wall that can bulge and potentially rupture, causing life-threatening bleeding into the surrounding brain tissue. On the other hand, an AVM is a tangled web of abnormal blood vessels that disrupts normal blood flow and increases the risk of bleeding or stroke. Both conditions require timely and precise surgical intervention to prevent complications and preserve brain function.
Treatment for brain aneurysms and AVMs typically involves one of several surgical approaches, depending on the size, location, and severity of the vascular abnormality. For aneurysms, the most common procedure is microsurgical clipping, where a small metal clip is placed at the base of the aneurysm to isolate it from the main artery and prevent rupture.
Alternatively, endovascular coiling can be used, which involves inserting a catheter into the blood vessel and filling the aneurysm with tiny coils to block blood flow. For AVMs, surgical resection or embolization may be performed to remove or block off the abnormal blood vessels, redirecting blood flow away from the AVM and reducing the risk of hemorrhage.
Aneurysm Treatment:
- Microsurgical clipping: Placing a metal clip at the base of the aneurysm.
- Endovascular coiling: Inserting coils through a catheter to block blood flow to the aneurysm.
AVM Treatment:
- Surgical resection: Removing the abnormal tangle of blood vessels.
- Embolization: Blocking off the AVM by injecting a substance to reduce blood flow.
